Which material makes a good everyday tote? Leather, canvas and nylon compared

For a tote you carry every day, smooth leather is the most practical all-round material: it wipes dry, keeps its shape and, with basic care, lasts for years. Canvas is lighter and cheaper but stains and softens out of shape; nylon is the lightest and shrugs off rain, but looks casual and wears at the corners. If weight is your main worry, look for a soft leather tote under 1 kg (2.2 lb), or one that mixes leather with fabric.

The three materials side by side

Smooth leather Canvas Nylon
Empty weight of a large tote about 0.7–1.7 kg (1.5–3.7 lb) about 0.3–0.6 kg (0.7–1.3 lb) about 0.2–0.5 kg (0.4–1.1 lb)
Rain Light rain is fine; blot it and let it dry Soaks through unless coated; can leave water marks Sheds water
Stains Most wipe off Absorbs them Wipe off
Shape over time Holds it, especially with a firm lining Softens and slumps Holds little shape of its own
Wear Softens; corners and handles show gentle marks Frays at edges and handles Scuffs and thins at the corners
Looks right with Tailoring and jeans alike Weekends, summer Travel, sport, casual

So the honest answer depends on the day you have. For an office, a city and a coat, leather. For the beach and the market, canvas or cotton. For a gym bag or a rainy commute where looks matter less, nylon.

How heavy should a tote bag be?

Every gram of the empty bag is carried all day, before the laptop goes in. As a rough guide, if you walk or take public transport, keep the empty tote under about 1 kg (2.2 lb). If the bag mostly travels by car from door to desk, a heavier, more structured tote is fine, and it will look the same at six in the evening as at nine in the morning.

Our own totes show how wide the range is, even in one material:

  • Francesca, dense textured cotton: 350 g (12.3 oz)
  • Riposo, cream fabric with black leather handles and base: 600 g (1.3 lb)
  • Jane Tote, leather or suede with a textile lining: 700 g (1.5 lb)
  • Carolyn Tote Medium, leather or suede with an eco-leather lining: 1250 g (2.8 lb)
  • Carolyn Large and Object №03 Large: 1700 g (3.7 lb)

The difference is structure. Carolyn keeps straight sides because of a dense eco-leather lining; Jane is softer and holds its shape with a center seam. Neither is better; one is lighter, one is firmer.

Mixed materials: the middle ground

A tote does not have to be one material. On the suede Jane, the body is suede and the handles are smooth leather, because handles are what your hands touch most and smooth leather is the easiest to keep clean. Riposo turns the idea around: a light fabric body for weight, with leather where a tote takes its load, the handles and the base. It is 60 × 33 × 10.5 cm (23.6 × 13 × 4.1 in) and takes a towel, a sweater and a laptop. Francesca, our summer tote, is open-weave cotton: do not wash or soak it, spot-clean it gently instead.

What makes a tote worth the price

A tote is used hard: loaded, dropped on floors, hung on chairs. Before paying for one, check:

  • The outer material, named plainly. "Genuine calfskin" or "suede" tells you what you are buying. A vague "leather-look" does not.
  • The lining. Eco-leather wipes clean and holds shape; dense textile is lighter. Thin, loose lining tears first.
  • The handle drop. At about 25 cm (9.8 in) a tote sits on the shoulder; nearer 30 cm (11.8 in) it goes over a winter coat. Ours range from 25 cm (9.8 in) on Object №03 Large to 31 cm (12.2 in) on Carolyn Large.
  • Seams and edges. Even stitches, no loose threads, smooth painted edges on the handles.
  • The terms. A warranty and a return window. Ours: a one-year warranty from the day of delivery and 30 days to return.

Then do the cost per year. A $500 leather tote carried five days a week for five years costs $100 a year, about 40 cents a day. A $60 canvas tote replaced every year costs $60 a year. The gap is smaller than the price tags suggest. For laptop sizes, see our guide to the leather tote for work; for what separates a quiet, well-made bag from a loud one, our quiet luxury guide.

Caring for a leather tote

Wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Every few months, a thin layer of colorless cream on smooth leather, tested on a hidden spot first. If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators. Store it filled with tissue paper, in its dust bag. More on our care page.

Questions

Is leather or canvas better for an everyday tote?

Leather, if the tote goes to work and has to keep its shape and survive rain. Canvas, if lightness and price matter most and the bag is for weekends.

Is a leather tote too heavy for every day?

Not if you choose a soft one. Jane weighs 700 g (1.5 lb) empty; structured totes run to 1.7 kg (3.7 lb).

Can a leather tote get wet?

Smooth leather copes with light rain: blot it and let it dry naturally. Suede should be kept dry.

Do you make canvas or nylon totes?

No. Our totes are leather or suede, Riposo mixes fabric with leather handles and base, and Francesca is a cotton summer tote.
