How to choose a leather tote for work
Choose a work tote by three numbers: the width of your laptop, the weight of the empty bag and the handle drop. A 13-inch laptop needs a tote about 36 cm (14.2 in) wide or more, a 14-inch one about 38 cm (15 in), a 15-inch one 42 cm (16.5 in) or more. A handle drop of 25 cm (9.8 in) or more lets the tote sit on the shoulder. And every gram of the bag itself is weight you carry all day.
Start with the laptop, not the bag
A tote is sold by its looks and chosen by what goes inside. Measure the width of your laptop with the lid closed, then add 4–5 cm so it slides in and out without catching the seams. Laptops of the same screen size differ by a centimeter or two, so the table gives ranges.

One honest note about shape. Object №03 Large is 44 cm at the base, but it is a trapezoid and narrows towards the top, so we rate it for a 13-inch laptop, not a bigger one. With any tote, the opening matters more than the base.
Weight: the number few people check
A leather tote is not light, and the difference between models is larger than it looks in a photograph. Our own totes show it well:
- Jane Tote — 700 g (1.5 lb)
- Carolyn Medium — 1250 g (2.8 lb)
- Carolyn Large and Object №03 Large — 1700 g (3.7 lb) each
The reason is structure. Carolyn keeps straight sides and a flat base because of a dense eco-leather lining; that is what lets it stand beside a desk and keep its lines when full, and it is also what it weighs. Jane has a softer body and a textile lining, with a center seam to hold the shape, and comes in at just over half the weight of Carolyn Medium. Neither is better. If you walk a lot or carry a heavy laptop, start from the lighter bag. If the tote mostly travels from car to office and you want it to look the same at six in the evening as at nine in the morning, choose structure.
Handles: can it go on the shoulder over a coat?
Handle drop is the distance from the top of the handle to the top edge of the bag. With about 25 cm (9.8 in) a tote sits on the shoulder; closer to 30 cm (11.8 in) it does so over a winter coat without a fight. Inside: lining, pocket, and the laptop itself
None of our totes has a padded laptop compartment, and we would rather say so. Carry the laptop in a sleeve: it protects the corners of the computer and the lining of the bag. Jane has one interior pocket of 24 × 12 cm (9.4 × 4.7 in) for a phone and keys. Carolyn is lined with eco-leather that wipes clean, which matters if a water bottle or a lunch box travels with the laptop. Object №03 Large closes with a magnet.
Smooth leather or suede for every day
For a bag that goes out five days a week in any weather, smooth leather is the easier choice: it is wiped with a dry cloth and treated now and then with a colorless cream. Suede is softer to the eye and wants a brush, a protective spray and a dry day. Carolyn Medium and Jane are made in both; on the suede Jane the handles stay in smooth leather. - Put what you carry daily on a kitchen scale, then add the weight of the bag.
- Check the handle drop against the coat you wear in winter.
