Chocolate brown and burgundy bags: how to wear the two deep colors of fall and winter
Wear a burgundy bag as the one color in an outfit of gray, navy, cream or black. Wear a chocolate brown bag as a softer black: it goes with cream, camel, denim and with black itself. Both are dark enough to carry every day from October to March. Ours are Marsala, a wine red in smooth calfskin, and Choco, a dark brown suede.
Our two shades, in plain words
Marsala is our burgundy: a deep wine red with a brown undertone. It looks rich in daylight and darker in the evening. Every Marsala bag is smooth calfskin, so it wipes clean and copes with a wet day.
Choco is a dark chocolate brown in suede. The nap catches the light, so the color moves between dark and warm as you walk. For smooth brown leather we use a different name, Brown, and it is a little lighter and more even.
How to wear a burgundy bag
- With gray. A gray coat or a charcoal knit is the calmest frame for burgundy. Nothing else needs to change.
- With navy. A navy coat and a Marsala bag look deliberate without trying; the bag becomes the point of the outfit.
- With cream and ivory. Burgundy with a cream sweater or an ivory coat looks warm and light at once.
- With black. At night especially. Black tailoring or a black dress with a burgundy bag is quieter than a red one, and still not plain.
- With brown and camel. A tonal look: camel coat, chocolate trousers, burgundy bag.
Shoes do not have to match. Black or dark brown boots both work with Marsala.
How to wear a chocolate brown bag
Chocolate brown goes almost everywhere black goes, with less contrast. It is easiest with cream, ivory, camel, beige and denim. With burgundy it builds a warm, dark palette; a Choco bag with a Marsala scarf is a good start if you are unsure about either color.
A chocolate brown bag with a black outfit works, and better in suede than in smooth leather: the matte nap sits softly against black wool instead of competing with it. Keep shoes black or dark brown and let the bag be the only warm note.
What about silver hardware?
All our bags have gold-tone hardware, so we can only speak for that pairing. Gold-tone on Marsala reads warm and close to the leather; on Choco suede it shows up a little more. If you wear silver jewelry, a small metal detail on a bag rarely clashes. The color of the leather sets the look, not the clasp.

On Britni in Choco, the body is suede and the strap and draped band are smooth dark-brown leather. Prima also comes in Brown, which is cotton fabric, not suede.
Suede or smooth leather in winter
If the bag will meet rain and snow, choose Marsala: smooth leather is wiped dry and needs a colorless cream every few months. Choco suede is for dry days. Spray it with a suede protector before the first wear, brush it in one direction, and if it gets wet, let it dry on its own before brushing. Dark suede shows marks less than light suede, which makes Choco a calm first suede bag. Our guide to leather or suede has the details.

Questions
What colors go with a burgundy bag?
Gray, navy, cream, camel, chocolate brown and black. Burgundy looks strongest as the only deep color in the outfit.
Can I wear a brown bag with a black outfit?
Yes. Chocolate brown is dark enough to sit with black, and suede does it more softly than smooth leather.
Is burgundy a neutral?
Not quite, but a dark burgundy like Marsala behaves almost like one: it goes with every neutral and with denim.
Is a brown suede bag practical in winter?
On dry days, yes. Treat it with a suede spray first and keep it out of heavy rain and snow.
