What is a “quiet luxury” bag? Six things to check before you buy
“Quiet luxury” is what people call a bag you recognize by its shape and make rather than by a logo. You can judge one in six places: the logo, the shape, the edges and seams, the lining, the hardware and the color. None of them needs a price tag — only a close look and the numbers on the product page.
We make leather bags, so we use our own as examples: those are the numbers we can stand behind.
1. The logo: small, or none
A bag of this kind is recognized by its outline, not by a print or a large plaque. If there is a mark, it is small and in one place. On our Sophie, for example, it is a small gold signature on the flap.
2. The shape: empty and full
Put the bag down empty. A well-made tote stands and its sides don’t fold in; filled, it keeps the outline it was designed with. What holds the shape is the construction and the lining. Carolyn keeps straight sides and a flat base because of a dense eco-leather lining. Jane is built softer, with a textile lining and a center seam, and weighs 700 g (1.5 lb) against 1250 g (2.8 lb) for Carolyn Medium. Both are honest designs: soft by intent is not the same as limp.
3. Edges and seams
Look at the cut edges of the leather on the handles and the flap. They should be smoothed and finished evenly along the whole length, with no loose fibers or rough patches. Stitches should run straight, at an even distance from the edge, with the same spacing throughout. Check where the handles join the body: that is where the weight hangs.
4. The lining
Open the bag. The lining should lie flat, without bubbles or loose folds, and the product page should say what it is made of. Ours: eco-leather that wipes clean in Untitled, Cecilie, Cleo and Carolyn; a dense textile, 67% polyester and 33% viscose, in Jane, Josefine and Object №03.
5. The hardware
A zip should run without catching, a magnet should close firmly, and rings and buckles should be metal. Ours is gold-tone metal hardware.
6. The color
Calm colors work with more of a wardrobe and for longer: black, brown, burgundy, navy, cream. A bag in one of them is easy to carry five days a week. Ours come in smooth leather in black, brown and marsala, in suede in choco, caramel and navy blue, and in milky. If you are choosing your first one, our guide to the everyday black leather bag compares seven shapes.
What to read on the product page
Dimensions, weight, handle drop, what the outside and the lining are made of, and where the bag is made. If a page doesn’t say, ask before you buy. Every Poelle bag lists them under Specifications, and every one is handmade in our atelier in Ukraine.
Questions
What is a quiet luxury bag?
A bag without a visible logo that is recognized by its shape, material and finish. The phrase is used for clothes and accessories that do not announce a brand.
How can I check the quality of a bag online?
Read the dimensions, weight and lining on the product page, and look for close-up photos of the edges, seams and hardware. If they are missing, write to the shop.
Leather or suede?
Both are natural leather. Smooth leather is easier for every day; suede is matte and deep in color but wants a brush and dry weather. See leather or suede.
Which color is the most versatile?
Black, then brown. Both go with most coats and shoes.
