The baguette bag: what it is, how to wear it, and which size to choose
A baguette bag is a long, low bag on a short strap, worn close under the arm, the way you would carry a loaf of bread. Most are 25–35 cm (10–14 in) wide and 10–15 cm (4–6 in) tall: room for a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick. Choose by width and strap length. Under 30 cm (11.8 in) it is a bag for evenings and light days; at 33–35 cm (13–14 in) it carries a full day.
What makes a bag a baguette
Three things. The bag is clearly wider than it is tall. It hangs on a short strap or handle, so it sits high, under the arm, not at the hip. And it is shallow, usually under 10 cm (3.9 in) deep, so it lies flat against the body.
That is the difference from its neighbors. A shoulder bag can be any shape and often hangs lower. A crossbody hangs on a long strap across the body. An east-west bag is the wider family the baguette belongs to: any bag that runs horizontally. For all the shapes side by side, see our guide to bag types and sizes.

Which size to choose
Start with your phone. A large phone is about 16 × 8 cm (6.3 × 3.1 in) and lies flat in any baguette from 25 cm (9.8 in) wide. Then add what else you carry. If it is cards and keys, a slim bag such as Britni, only 5 cm (2 in) deep, is enough and looks neat under the arm. If you carry a wallet and sunglasses in a case, look for depth: Cecilie at 9 cm (3.5 in) or Untitled Medium at 13 cm (5.1 in). Depth decides more than width in a baguette.
Weight matters too, because a baguette hangs from one shoulder. Britni weighs 400 g (14.1 oz), Cecilie 650 g (1.4 lb), Untitled Medium 900 g (2 lb).
How to wear a baguette bag
On the shoulder, under the arm. This is the classic way. A handle drop of 25–28 cm (9.8–11 in) keeps the bag high and close. Over a thick winter coat, a longer drop helps; Cecilie's 27.5 cm (10.8 in) handles go over a coat.
In the hand. A baguette with a top handle, like Untitled Small, is carried like a small case and looks more dressed.
Across the body. A baguette crossbody needs a long strap. Cleo's adjusts from 123 to 148 cm (48.4 to 58.3 in): long, it goes across the body; short, it sits on the shoulder like a classic baguette.
By day, a baguette works with straight jeans, a white shirt and a blazer, because the horizontal line of the bag echoes the jacket's hem. In the evening it replaces a clutch and leaves your hands free.
Height matters a little too. On a petite frame, a shorter baguette such as Cleo or Britni keeps the proportions right. On a tall frame or over a long coat, the longer Cecilie or Untitled Medium balances the line.
Black, suede or a color
A black baguette bag is the easiest to wear: Britni, Cecilie and both Untitled sizes come in smooth black calfskin with gold-tone hardware. A suede baguette looks softer and deeper in color: Cecilie in caramel, choco or navy suede, Britni in choco (suede body, smooth leather strap and band), Untitled Small in choco or orange suede. Suede prefers dry days; our guide to leather or suede explains the care. Marsala, a deep burgundy, comes in Britni, Cecilie and Untitled Medium.

Questions
What is a baguette bag?
A long, low, shallow bag on a short strap, worn under the arm. The name comes from the way a French loaf is carried.
Does a phone fit in a baguette bag?
Yes, in any baguette at least 25 cm (9.8 in) wide; the phone lies flat. All five bags in the table take a phone.
Can you wear a baguette bag crossbody?
Only if it has a long strap. Cleo's strap adjusts to 148 cm (58.3 in), so it works both ways.
What is the difference between a baguette and a shoulder bag?
A baguette is a kind of shoulder bag: long, low and shallow, on a short strap that keeps it high under the arm. Other shoulder bags can be taller, deeper and hang lower.
Is a baguette bag practical for every day?
Yes, if it is deep enough for what you carry. At 13 cm (5.1 in) deep, Untitled Medium takes a wallet, sunglasses and a small cosmetic bag.
