Leather handbags under $500 that are built to last: what to check, and where the money goes

Under $500 you can buy a handbag in genuine calfskin or suede, cut and stitched by hand, that will be carried for years. To tell it apart from one that won't, check five things: what the outside is made of, the lining, the seams and edges, the hardware, and the terms that come with it. Below is how to check each, and nine of our bags priced from $360 to $500.

Where the money goes

A handbag's price pays for three things: the material, the hours of work, and getting the bag to you. The first two are what you carry. The third is what you should not pay twice. On poelle.com, delivery is free and import duties and taxes are included in the price, so the number on the product page is the number you pay. When comparing bags, check whether duties and shipping are on top; on an imported bag they can add a noticeable share.

Five things to check

1. The outer material, named plainly

A product page should say exactly what the outside is: "genuine calfskin", "suede", "patent leather". Words like "leather-look", "PU" or "vegan leather" mean plastic. "Bonded leather" means leather scraps glued together. None of these is wrong at the right price, but none belongs in a bag at $400.

2. The lining

Turn the bag inside out in your head. A firm eco-leather lining holds the shape and wipes clean; a dense textile lining is lighter and softer. Both are fine. A thin, loose lining that crackles is where cheap bags fail first. Ours: Cecilie, Britni and the Untitled bags are lined in eco-leather; Josefine, Elza and Jane in a dense polyester and viscose textile.

3. Seams and edges

Look at the stitches along a handle. They should be even in length and straight, with no loose ends. The cut edges of the leather should be smooth and painted, not raw or fraying. Check the corners, where the leather turns: they should be neat, with no puckering.

4. Hardware

Buckles, rings and clasps should feel solid and close firmly. Ours is gold-tone metal throughout. A magnetic closure, like on Elza or Debut, should shut by itself when you bring the flap near.

5. The terms

A maker who expects a bag to last says so in writing. Ours come with a one-year warranty from the day of delivery: manufacturing defects in seams, hardware, construction, lining and material are repaired in our atelier or the piece is replaced, free of charge. And you have 30 days from delivery to return an unused bag. See our returns and warranty.

What is an investment bag?

The phrase gets used loosely. In practice it is a bag you will carry three or more days a week for years, so the cost per wear ends up low. That points to a few choices: a neutral or deep color (black, brown, navy, Marsala), a mid size that works with a coat and without one, and a shape that does not depend on a season. A $450 bag carried twice a week for five years costs under a dollar a wear. For the style side of this, read our guide to the quiet luxury bag; for a first black bag, the everyday black leather bag.
