What bag to carry to a winter wedding, a holiday party or New Year's Eve

For a winter wedding or a party, carry a bag that holds a phone, a card case, keys and a lipstick and leaves at least one hand free for a glass: a small shoulder bag on a short strap, or a top-handle bag you can hang from the wrist. A clutch looks the most dressed but keeps a hand busy all night, so choose one you can tuck under your arm.

Clutch or small shoulder bag?

Think about the evening, not just the outfit. At a seated dinner or a ceremony, a clutch is easy: it sits on your lap or the table. At a reception, a party or a crowded New Year's Eve, you will be standing, holding a glass, shaking hands, finding your coat ticket. There a strap or a wrist handle earns its place.

What it has to hold

Most evening bags fail on one thing: the phone. A large phone is about 16 × 8 cm (6.3 × 3.1 in). Add a card case, keys, a lipstick and, in winter, a coat-check ticket. That is the minimum. If you also carry a compact, a small perfume or reading glasses, look for a bag at least 25 cm (9.8 in) wide or with real depth.

The smallest bags are honest about it. Sophie Bag Small, 13.5 × 10 × 6 cm (5.3 × 3.9 × 2.4 in), takes cards, keys, a lipstick and earbuds, but a large smartphone may not fit. If your phone comes with you, take Sophie Medium, 20 × 11 × 8 cm (7.9 × 4.3 × 3.1 in), instead.

Our evening bags, and what each one is good at

Elza Clutch, $370–470. A soft envelope with a folded top. It is 43 × 25 × 15 cm (16.9 × 9.8 × 5.9 in) unfolded; folded over, it is carried in the hand or under the arm. A magnetic closure and two inside pockets, one zipped. It takes a phone, a wallet and a small cosmetic bag, so it also works on the day you travel to the wedding. In smooth black, brown, red or Marsala, in caramel, milky or navy suede, and in walnut or snake print.
Debut, $485. A small gathered suede bag, 25.5 cm (10 in) wide, with one short handle, 10 cm (3.9 in) drop, that sits on the wrist. Magnetic closure, 200 g (7.1 oz). Phone, cards, keys, lipstick, coat ticket. In choco, olive, lime or orange.
Britni, $380. A long, slim bag, 28 × 12 × 5 cm (11 × 4.7 × 2 in), on a 60 cm (23.6 in) strap that keeps it high under the arm and your hands free. Black and Marsala for winter nights; milky for a lighter look.
Bell Mini, $390. A bell shape, 26 × 19 × 8 cm (10.2 × 7.5 × 3.1 in), on a 56 cm (22 in) strap, 450 g (15.9 oz). In Marsala it is one of the warmest bags we make for December.
Untitled Small, $420–450. A trapezoid with a flap and one arched handle, carried like a small case. It has an open pocket and no clasp, so it suits a seated dinner better than a crowded bar.
Prima Mini, $550. A wavy east-west shape in choco or lime suede, carried by its handles.

Colors for a winter evening

Black is always right and never the most interesting choice. Marsala, our deep burgundy, looks warm against black, gray and navy and is made for December. Navy suede is the soft alternative to black; our Blue Velvet pieces, in deep navy suede, include the Elza Clutch and Cecilie. Snake print adds texture to a plain dress without adding color.

Winter details people forget

Snow and rain. Suede likes dry evenings. If you will walk or wait for a taxi in wet snow, take smooth leather, or treat the suede with a protective spray beforehand.
The coat. A shoulder strap has to go over a coat on the way there and over a dress at the party. A strap of 56–60 cm (22–23.6 in), like Bell Mini's or Britni's, sits well on both.
The coat check. Keep the ticket in the bag's inside pocket, not loose.
